Arthur has 'no regrets' over 'disciplinary breach' suspension of Oz quartet from Mohali Test

Johannesburg, Mar 23 : Australian coach Mickey Arthur has once again defended his decision to drop four players for the third Test against India for disciplinary reasons, and said that he has no regrets for taking that decision.

Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson, James Pattinson and Usman Khawaja were suspended for failing to respond to a request from management to suggest ways to improve the Australia team, Sport24 reports.

Arthur said that he believed in what he did, and will make the same decision if a similar incident happens again, adding that the management has to demand excellence from the team, which has inexperienced but talented young players, so that they can regain the number one spot in the world.

Stating that the other option for the team will be to flounder in mediocrity and stay third or fourth in the world, Arthur said that the management needed to put the team first, be ruthless on team etiquette and basics so that the team has the best possible chance of winning the Ashes.

However, Arthur said that the decision to drop the four players was the toughest of his coaching career, even as Australia, who play England in back-to-back Ashes series later this year, lost the first three Tests in India.
