The West Indies won the toss and decided to bat in the fourth one-day international against South Africa at Kingsmead Friday. All tickets for the match had been sold for Shaun Pollock's final match in his home town before his retirement following the final match in Johannesburg Sunday. The West Indies, already 3-0 down in the five-match series, hoped to take advantage of a good batting pitch on a scorching hot day in a day-night match. South Africa, having clinched the series, rested fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Charl Langeveldt and brought back Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel. Shivnarine Chanderpaul returned to the West Indian team in place of Runako Morton after missing the third match because of a knee injury. After a promising debut as a batsman, Patrick Browne was retained and also took over the wicketkeeping gloves from Denesh Ramdin, with leg-spinner Rawl Lewis coming into the team.
