Sydney, Sep 20: Australia vice-captain Shane Watson has said his team’s convincing seven wicket win over Ireland with 29 balls to spare in their opening match of the Twenty20 World Cup on Wednesday, has sent a strong message to other rivals.
Watson was adjudged man of the match after the match for his emphatic all round performance, gabbing three wickets for 26 runs and then blasting 51 runs of 30 balls during the run chase.
“We knew how important it was to make a statement in this game as much as anything,” News.com.au quoted Watson, as saying.
Watson opened the bowling for Australia and picked up Ireland captain William Porterfield’s wicket with the very first ball of the game.
“I know that bowling the first over starts with me so I knew how important it was to try and set the tone and it worked out very nicely. We had to maintain the intensity all the way through the whole game and it worked out really well for us,” Watson said.
“It’s always a relief after the game. We knew where we had to be mentally. We knew if we were really up for it, which we certainly were, that we were going to have the best chance of not getting the tag of being beaten by Ireland,” he added.
