Tue, 22Feb 2011-England vs Netherlands World Cup 2011-5th match Group B-Bulletin
England win against fighting Netherlands England overcame some nervy moments in the later stages of the run chase to score a 6 wicket their first group B match against Netherlands played at VCA Stadium. English side that put behind their shabby bowling and fielding effort after Netherlands chose to bat paced their chase of 293 runs nicely with their skipper leading the way with an 83-ball 89 run inning. There were also noteworthy contribution from Trott, Bell and Peterson with undefeated 5th wicket partnership of Collingwood and Bopara giving much needed finishing touches to the chase. Needing 37 off last five overs, Collingwood and Bopara scored 30 not-out each give their team a comfortable win with 8 balls remaining. It was, however, top order batsmen, who set up the win with opening partnership of Peterson and Strauss putting up 105 runs before Trott joined his captain to string another good partnership of 51 runs for the 2nd wicket. Strauss’s well planned innings, included nine hits to the fence, involved Strauss run swiftly between the wickets in sultry conditions and, as always, was strong square of the wicket cutting and pulling to a good effect. Peterson problems with left arm spin continued getting out to Seelar caught brilliantly by captain Borren at short covers for 39 runs. Strauss vigil at the crease ended when he miscued a pull short off Bukhari well taken in the deep by Cooper. The wicket of Strauss brought Bell (33 runs) and Trott (62 runs) together who both batted sensibly to put on 58 runs before both getting out in a quick succession making run chase interesting. It needed calm heads of Collingwood and Bopara to ensure England win. Ten Doeschate backed up his terrific century in the first innings with a two wicket haul and conceding just 47 runs in his allotted ten overs. Earlier, Netherlands big total was made possible thanks to Ten Doeschate’s well constructed century well assisted by significant contributions from lower order batsmen. Coming at number four after Dutch had lost their openers in a quick succession, Netherlands best player, Ten Doeschate paced his innings superbly taking his him initially to settle down before launching an array of strokes to all parts of the ground against English bowlers who looked hapless. Punctuated with nine fours and three sixes, Ten Doeschate’s 119 runs came off 110 balls and he was involved with some useful partnerships with Tom Cooper, Tom De Grooth and skipper Peter Borren helping his team to substantial total. He brought up his century in an unusual fashion after a direct hit ricocheted to boundary and on his way to the land mark not only played copy book strokes but innovated to get English bowlers off the length. After sharing a 3rd wicket partnership of 78 runs with Tom Cooper (47 runs off 63 balls), he got involved with two breezy partnerships- 64 with Grooth (28 runs) for 5th wicket and 61 with Borren (35 runs) for 6th wicket. Netherlands were aided by some poor England fielding performance dropping catches and looking confused in the slog overs. Barring off spinner Swann who took 2 wickets for 35 runs, English bowlers were given a tough time by Ten Doeschate and his fellow batsmen with their opening bowlers Anderson and Broad conceding more than a 6 runs per over. Un-inspirational fielding effort let bowlers down giving a break to Ten Doeschate on 47 when Peterson and Anderson decided not to go for a rather easy catch. In the death over, England captain Straus looked confused having only three fielders inside the circle costing them a Borren’s wicket. After an aggressive start by the openers Alexei Kervezee and Wesley Barresi scoring 36 runs off first 6 overs, England came back by nipping both of them out in quick succession. Barresi, in particular, was in belligerent mood in his 25 ball 29 runs innings six 6 boundaries that included three in one Broad’s over. It was Bresnan who gave England first success by removing Kervezee forcing him to lob a short ball to Prior ending what was appearing a solid opening stand. Swann, as usual, got a wicket in his first over, stumping out dangerous looking Barresi when batsman failed to pick his straighter delivery and Prior’s nifty glove work.
Man of the match: Ryan ten Doeschate (Netherlands) England closing on victory England need 71 runs off their last overs for a victory with 8 wickets and batting powerplay in hand over Netherlands who scored 292 runs in the first innings.
