Tue, 01 March 2011 - Sri Lanka vs Kenya,World Cup 2011, 14th match Group A - Bulletin

Hat-trick boy Malinga scripts easy SL win

After crushing Kenyan batting line-up courtesy fast bowler Lasith Malinga six-wicket haul, Sri Lankan batsmen finished the target of 143 runs in a blink with nine wickets still intact to register an easy win over Kenya.

It was a third consecutive poor performance from the Kenya, looking a shadow of the Kenyan teams that have taken part in previous editions of world cup.

Sri Lanka finished the chase inside 19 overs led by aggressive opening stand of 72 runs off 50 balls with Dilshan racing to 44 off 30 balls including 8 fours before edging to Elijah Oteino to wicket keeper Maurice Ouma.

His partner Upul Tharanga and skipper Kumar Sangakara completed remaining 71 runs in next eleven overs with Tharanga remaining undefeated on 67 that included twelve hits to the fence and Sangakara on 27.

However, it was Lasith Malinga toe-crushing yorkers that blew away Kenyan batsmen with whole line-up combusting for just 142 runs in the first innings after Kenyan skipper Jimmy Kamande decided to bat first.
Malinga’s fiery spell in which he took six wickets including a hat trick-making him only bowler to take two hat tricks in world cup-clearly indicated what Sri Lanka were missing in the first two matches.

He was on the money with his lethal and pacy yorkers getting all of six wickets either clean bowled or leg before wicket as Kenyan batsmen appeared to have no skill and answers in their arsenal.

His hat trick scalps included Tanmay Mishra, Ongondo and Ngoche completing his six wicket haul by castling E Oteino.

His other wickets included SR waters in the first spell by trapping him in-front of wickets by bowling a scorching yorker and his other scalp was Collins Obuya to have his figures reading 6 wickets for 38 runs.
Only piece of resistance from Kenyan camp came from Obuya brothers-Collins and David Obuya-putting on 94 runs for the 3rd wicket to resurrect the innings after it was reeling on 8 for 2.

Kenya and nothing to show on either side of the partnership as barring the Obuyas none of the batsmen could have a double digit score and all other nine batsmen combined scored only twenty runs.

Both scored fifties with low strike rates as Collins scored his 52 off 100 balls and David had 51 off 106 runs.
Other bowlers amongst the wickets included Nuwan Kulasekra, Muttaih Murlitharan and Angelo Mathews who all took a wicket apiece.
