Thu, 14 Apr 2011 - IP Hyderabad vs IP Bangalore, IPL 2011, 11th Match - Bulletin

Hyderabad finally win at home and, that, too in some style.

After youngsters fired with the bat to power their side to a big total, fast bowling trio of Dale Steyn, Ishant Sharma and Manpreet Gony bowled hostile to give their side a spirited 33 run victory over Bangalore at their home ground, Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Uppal Hyderabad.

All-round Hyderabad comeback with strong win

Despite the batting heroics from Virat Kohli who played a lone fighting hand with classy 71, Bangalore never looked in the hunt during their chase of 176 runs as Hyderabad bowlers kept picking up wickets one after another.

Bangalore’s reply was dented early with Sharma accounted for Tillakaratne Dilshan with his out-swinger on seven and he was followed in the dressing room by Zaheer Khan inexplicably promoted to number three as Steyn was too hot for him to handle with South African uprooting his stumps thanks to well pitched up delivery.

Gony playing his first game for Hyderabad made further inroads having Mayank Agarwal caught at mid-on and followed up with the wicket of AD de Villiers having star batsman poking at one going away only to be pouched by Sangakkara behind the wickets.

Sangakkara had a good day behind the stumps claiming five catches.

Amit Mishra had a wicket off his first ball to have Bangalore reeling with five wickets gone back to the shed but Kohli wasn’t bothered as he kept clobbering bowlers to raise hopes of Bangalore fans.

He was particularly severe on his Ranji teammate Mishra collecting boundaries and sixes off him at ease but mountain of a big Hyderabad score proved to be too much as he perished in pursuit of quick runs castled by impressive Gony for his third wicket in the match.

Kohli put on 62 for the sixth wicket with Pujara during his 51-ball 71 including five fours and three sixes and Bangalore was hit hard when Steyn in comeback spell has two wickets of Pujara and Johan Vanderwath in two balls.

With Gony getting Kohli, only formalities were left as Hyderabad had a spirited day in the field with players showing lots of energy and commitment.

Steyn’s returns for the match were 3 for 24 in his four while Gony has 3 for 31 in same number of overs.

Earlier Hyderabad gave their best performance with the bat with young batsmen steeped to the stage to help their side to post a mammoth score of 175.

It was young Bharat Chipli’s undefeated 61 and solid contributions from Sunny Sohal, skipper Kumar Sangakkara and JP Dumminy that boosted Hyderabad to the big total as all of them kept the scoring rate going at a brisk rate.

After Sunny Sohal’s more than run a ball 38 at the top of the order, Chipli alongside Sangakkara and then with Dumminy put together decent and quick fire partnerships virtually bat Bangalore out of the game.

Sunny, who lost his opening partner Shekhar Dhawan early, put a foot on accelerator and engaged with his captain to put on more than run a ball fifty run second wicket partnership.

While Sohal was brutal in his approach hitting some and missing others during his 37 ball stay that saw him hit five fours and a six Sangakkara was his usual self playing some gorgeous strokes and guiding his younger partner all along.

Sanga used his feet against spinners and used the pace of the fast bowlers to hit a 25-ball 36 including three fours and a six and partnered Chipli to put another 43 runs for the 3rd wicket giving much of the strike to Chipli who was on the rampage from the word without giving any respect to the reputation of the opposition bowlers.

He hit three fours off consecutive deliveries in one Zaheer over and also treated spinners with utter disdain on his way to a 35-ball 61 including five hits to the boundary and three towering sixes.

He combined with Dumminy to give scoreboard a late order charge as they put on 55 off only 28 deliveries with Dumminy a breezy 22.

None of the Bangalore bowlers could impress in the conditions which were better used by Hyderabad fast bowlers during their successful defence of the target.
