Thu, 03 Mar 2011 - South Africa vs Netherlands, World Cup 2011, 16th match Group B - Bulletin

South Africa crush Dutch by 231 runs

Another world cup encounter involving a minnow turned out to be a mismatch with Netherlands handed over a crushing defeat by South Africa in group B match played at Mohali, Punjab.

South African bowlers backed up a super batting effort by nailing whole of Dutch team for just 120 runs while chasing a big total of 352 runs.

Barring Barresi (44 runs off 66 balls), none of the Dutch batsmen could offer any resistance against disciplined South African bowling.

Leg spinner Imran Tahir was again impressive taking three wickets, while Jacques Kallis and Robin Peterson had two scalps each giving Dutch no chance to threaten South Africa.

Earlier, centuries from Hashim Amla and AB Devilliers and late blitz from JP Dumminy propelled South Africa to a mammoth score of 351 runs in their first innings.

After put into bat by Netherlands captain Peter Robben, South Africa struggled in the initial stages of innings losing two wickets for 58 runs inside sixteen overs but a marathon 3rd wicket partnership between Amla and Devilliers powered Proteas to a big total.

Both put on 221 runs at more than run a ball rate to dominate inexperienced Dutch bowling attack with both scoring centuries.

While Devilliers, scoring his second hundred in the tournament, was fluent from the word go his partner Amla played unlike Amla innings struggling for timing in the initial periods.

Devilliers scored his 134 off only 98 balls hitting thirteen boundaries and four sixes to make life difficult for the Dutch bowlers. His driving on both sides of the wicket, pull shot and, as usual, quick running between the wickets was highlight of his innings.

He didn’t let bowlers settle and his partner Amla couldn’t find his timing early in the innings but made sure that he didn’t lose his wicket.

Calm Amla found the gaps and resorted to singles and doubles and odd boundaries in between to collect his first world cup century. He picked up the pace once he got a hang of a pitch and scored his 113 runs off 130 balls including eight hits to the fence.

South Africa scored 206 runs off last twenty overs with Dumminy blazing 40 runs off 15 ball hitting 4 sixes.
For Netherlands, Ten Doeschate took three wickets conceding 72 runs in his ten overs but it was medium pacer Mudasir Bukhari who was the best bowler on the park giving away only 44 runs in his ten.

Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis again failed to post a big score getting out for 20 and two runs

Man of the Match -  AB de Villiers

TOSS

Netherlands have won the toss and asked South Africa to bat first on a Mohali pitch that is supposed to offer some pace to the fast bowlers.

Peter Borren, Dutch captain hopes that his side comes with a better performance than what they did against West Indies.

South African skipper, Graeme Smith says that he would also have liked to bowl first on this pitch with early morning condition in the Mohali expected to favour fast men.

While Netherlands are unchanged for the match, South Africa have made a one change to the team that played against West Indies benching their number one spinner Johan Botha for batsman Morne Van Wyk.
