Taylor keen to retain Kiwis captaincy despite erratic relationship with coach Hesson

Wellington, Oct 5: Ross Taylor has expressed his willingness to retain the New Zealand captaincy following a disappointing Twenty20 World Cup campaign in Sri Lanka.

Taylor said he is working hard to improve and is getting along well with Kiwi coach Mike Hesson.

During the tournament Hesson got tongues wagging with a confusing answer to a question about Taylor''s captaincy for the three forms of the game, putting question marks over Taylor’s future as captain.

However, Taylor said the coach had moved swiftly to personally clarify things.

“He came and knocked on my door and explained what had happened. I hadn''t read the paper by then. Our focus was on the tournament at the time. I don''t think it detracted from anything,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Taylor, as saying.

“We are working on our relationship and we are pretty happy with where things are going. Obviously we would have liked to have gone on with the tournament,” he added.

“Any relationship with captain and coach is important to team dynamics. Me and Hess have been getting on well. We are still learning (about) each other ... how we operate ... and I''m sure over the next few months we will keep improving on our relationship,” he said.

Taylor made it clear he is keen to carry on as captain of the Kiwi team.

“I enjoy it. It has its moments which are not as great. Every time you lose it''s not a great feeling but I guess the pros outweigh the negatives,” Taylor said.

“I''ve learnt a lot and I think I have a lot to give back to New Zealand cricket. First and foremost, my role as captain is to lead from the front and score runs. I think I''m doing that,” he added.
