Mumbai humble Deccan on Sachin’s birthday

Deccan turned to be no match Mumbai with both ball and ball with Sachin Tendulkar led side outplaying home team to win the game by 37 runs and go to the top of the IPL standings. The one sided victory was a special one for Mumbai coinciding with the birthday of their skipper.

The super bowling performance was again led by paceman Lasith Malinga who took three wickets for only nine in his four to rattle Deccan chase that never looked to threaten the Mumbai total of 172 runs.

Moment when Deccan had a partnership going for them, Malinga claimed a wicket none bigger that his former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara when he had left handers stumps disturbed.

Sangakkara who played a fighting 34 to demonstrate his value to the inexperienced batting lineup backed away to give himself room but failed to make contact and saw his stumps rattled. With skipper’s dismissal Deccan’s hopes were dashed as most of the batsmen failed to perform infront of the home crowd.

In addition to Sangakkara, Malinga had wickets of Shekhar Dhawan and Ravi Teja having former bowled off a yorker while youngster with a well disguised slower one. Mumbai repeated their terrific display in the field effecting three crucial run out to take challenge out of Deccan’s batting effort.

Other notable scorers for Deccan apart from their skipper were Dhawan (25), Daniel Christian (21) and Amit Mishra (25) but none of them were able to play long innings resulting in batsmen succumbing to clinical Mumbai.

Mumbai overcame a middle order collapse that saw them lose three wickets without a run to post a stiff target of 173 that was largely made possible courtesy a brilliant fifth wicket partnership of 102 runs between Rohit Sharma and Andrew Symonds.

The pair after doing a rebuilding process brilliantly exploded in end overs with both Symonds and Sharma making mockery of Deccan bowlers and boundaries.Sharma came up with successive half centuries in two matches as pace duo of Ishant Sharma and dale Steyn were taken to cleaners to help Mumbai surge to a big total. Symonds who took some time to settle down took liking to Steyn and co to remain undefeated on 44 that came off 33 balls including fours boundaries and a six.

Sharma was class personified cracking some gorgeous square drives and pull shots as right hander hit five fours and three sixes in his 56 coming off 34 balls.

After sent into bat, visitors got off to a rollicking start with birthday boy Sachin and Dave Jacobs racing to 47 in five overs only to be reduced to 70 for 4 with spinners Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha sharing three wickets without conceding a run lifting Deccan after punched hard by Mumbai openers.

Sachin was at his usual self hitting the gaps with precision and looking in terrific form on his way to 24 -ball 28 while Jacobs was touch agricultural as he favoured mid-wicket in his 32 that came off 20 balls before falling Ishant Sharma.

Mumbai was well placed at 70 for 1 in ninth over as suddenly Sachin decided to charge down the wicket but failed to clear Dale Steyn at long-off and Mishra followed it up another big wicket next ball having Ambati Rayudu caught by Shekhar Dhawan for seven.

Mishra missed the hat trick but Ojha’s first ball fetched Deccan wicket of Kieran Pollard as big hitting West Indian chose to sweep his first ball he faced only to top edge to the gloves of Sangakkara.

With Deccan on top after getting quick wickets, Sharma and Symonds absorbed the pressure and went for rampage to dent home team hard.
