South Africa bowl in reduced-overs match

South Africa won the toss and sent the West Indies in to bat in a rain-delayed first one-day international at Centurion Park.

With the start delayed by three-and-a-quarter hours, the match was reduced to 36 overs a side.

Because of the changed conditions, South Africa made a late change to the side originally selected, with seam bowling all-rounder Albie Morkel replacing off-spinner Johan Botha on a pitch likely to favour seam bowlers.

In one other change from the side that clinched a one-day series against New Zealand last month, Justin Ontong replaced batsman Herschelle Gibbs, who was unavailable for the opening match for personal reasons.

The West Indies, already hard hit by injuries, were without opening bowler Jerome Taylor, who was replaced by Daren Powell from the side that lost by four wickets in Twenty20 international in Johannesburg on Friday.

Opening batsman Brenton Parchment replaced leg-spinner Rawl Lewis.

Tour captain Chris Gayle was still unable to play because of a broken thumb, while stand-in skipper Dwayne Bravo played as a batsman only because of a side strain.
