Sat, 29 Oct 2011 - Bangladesh vs West Indies, West Indies Tour of Bangladesh 2011-12, 2nd Test MatchDAY, 5: Bangladesh*: 231 - 278 / 10 in 80.2 overs RR: 3.46, West Indies: 355 - 383/5 d in 111.3 overs RR: 3.43 West Indies win by 229 runs All-round West Indies script series triumph West Indies managed to translate their domination over last four days into an emphatic 229-run victory over the hosts Bangladesh on the final day of the second and final test match. The overall 1-0 scoreline gave the tourists their first test series victory in three and half years, and, more significantly, first series triumph away from home since November 2003. The emphatic victory was made possible thanks to an all-round show from the Caribbean side: riding on a good show from young batsmen-Kirk Edwards in specific-in the first innings, Fidel Edwards ripped through Bangladesh top order to earn his side a lead of 124. Darren Bravo’s superlative effort powered target to 508 before Devendra Bishoo-bagging his maiden five-wicket haul- spun his side to a massive victory on the fifth day after noon. A victory by a big margin was far cry when skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and former skipper Shaqibul Hassan were going great guns. The duo gave their fans a glimmer of hope putting on attacking 88 after Bangladesh lost Tamim Iqbal early morning. All that hope evaporated into a humiliating loss when the visiting team’s skipper Darren Sammy lulled Shaqibul into a false stroke. Shaqibul’s dismissal triggered a collapse as Bishoo’s quality leg spin was too hot to handle with last six wickets adding just 22 runs. The young leggie ended with impressive figures of 5 for 90 in his 25 overs to go with 3 for 62 in his first innings. The fifth day started with the home team still in a need of 344 and Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim at the crease. It didn’t take Bishoo long to have a say when his flighted delivery lured left handed Tamim into an expansive drive finding an edge for Sammy to take a catch at first slip. The dashing left hander could add only one run to his overnight score of 82. This brought Shaqibul to the crease and in his successor’s company Bangladesh’s chase got some impetus. The right and left handed combination got into act as both of them played some spanking strokes to make things interesting. Rahim’ cover driving was from a top drawer school of batting and Shaqibul wasn’t to be left behind thumping some forceful drives and pull shots to get home crowd going. The visitors looked short of answers as Shaqibul and Rahim reached their respective half-centuries. Last half-hour before the lunch break changed it all. Sammy got a big wicket of Shaqibul as the left hander couldn’t keep one down for Shiv Chanderpaul to take a well judged catch. Shaqibul departed for a very classy 55 off 70 balls laced with seven hits to the fence as Bangladesh score read 256 for 5. It soon became 260 for 6 when Bishoo ripped a venomous leg break to breach Rahim’s defences to take his off-stump, and, consequently, end Bangladesh’s challenge. The skipper fell for a resolute and full of quality 69 that lasted for 109 balls and punctuated with nine fours. Post lunch, it was all Bishoo and nothing from Bangladesh lower order. First over after break, Bishoo’s flipper caught Nasir Hossain plumb infront, and, two balls later had debutant Suhrawardi Shuvo caught in the slips. The young leggie completed his maiden five wicket haul unleashing a skidder to send Naeem Islam packing. Kemar Roach completed the formalities by castling Rubel Hossain to complete a resounding victory © eContent.in |
