Sat, 19 Mar 2011 - Bangladesh vs South Africa, World Cup 2011, 39th match Group B - Bulletin

Clinical Proteas send Bangladesh packing

Bangladesh’s hope of making it into the knockout stage was all but dashed as South Africa trounced them by a humiliating margin of 206 runs in a group B match of the world cup at Mirpur Stadium.

Despite resting their premier bowlers in Steyn and Morkel, South Africa put up a thoroughly clinical performance to outplay Bangladesh in all the departments of the game.

Things had looked ominous for Bangladesh right from the onset of their second innings as faced with an uphill task of chasing down 285, openers went early within the span of first seven overs. From there on, they never recovered as wickets fell like pack of cards and eventually the team was shot out for a paltry 78 runs in 28 overs.

None of the Bangladeshi batsmen barring the skipper Saqib shown any application when situation demanded them to stay on the wicket and build the innings. That, 10 out of 11 batsmen failed to reach into double figures, spoke volume for the pathetic display of batting Bangladeshi batsmen put up here.

For South Africa, comeback man Lonwabo Tsotsobe starred in the great Bangla decimation as he celebrated his return into the playing eleven with three quick wickets at the top of the order. His clinical spell also won him man of the match award.

Once Tsotsobe was taken off, Peterson donned the role of tormentors-in chief for Bangladesh as he returned with amazing figures of 4 for 12 in 4 overs to script a huge South African win.

Earlier, South Africa’s massive first innings score was built around the half centuries of Opener Amla(51off 59), the experienced Kallis(69 off 76) and young Du Plessis(52 off 52) before Robin Peterson slammed a quick fire 9-ball 22 to take the score past 280.

South African batsmen looted 63 runs in last six overs even as five wickets fell in the bargain.

However, the platform for this late-order assault was set up by Smith and Amla in the morning as they put together a steady stand of 98 runs for the first wicket.

Bangladesh*: 78 / 10 in 28.0 overs RR: 2.79

Naeem Islam b Peterson 8 (20b 1x4 0x6) SR: 40.00

And it’s all over…Peterson castled Islam to bring up a thumping South African win…Bangladesh is ousted from the world cup…..Spectators sink in despair at Mirpur….

Bangladesh*: 62 / 9 in 24.6 overs RR: 2.48

Abdur Razzak c Peterson b Imran Tahir 0 (2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Imran joining the Bangladesh feast now….his first wicket of the match as Razzak goes…Proteas now only a wicket away from a thumping win

Bangladesh*: 61 / 8 in 23.4 overs RR: 2.58

Shakib Al Hasan c van Wyk b Peterson 30 (49b 4x4 0x6) SR: 61.22

It’s nearly all over for Bangladesh as their last hope the skipper Shakib falls…..South Africa look in hurry to wrap up the game and top the group….

Bangladesh*: 58 / 6 in 21.3 overs RR: 2.76

Mahmudullah run out 5 (17b 0x4 0x6) SR: 29.41

This game is getting off to an early finish….Bangladesh clearly rattled under pressure...there was no single as Mahmudullah went for it bringing about his downfall….Spectators have already began to leave the field…..And among the ones who are still left on the ground, some appear absolutely stunned while some do break into occasional cheers as and when TV cameras are panned towards them…..Surely they are having fun….
