Melbourne, Aug 4: Australia’s new bowling coach Allister de Winter, who was named to take the role vacated by Craig McDermott, will have to prepare his bowlers to confront South Africa in November.
De Winter, 44, said his chief goal was to conquer the injury challenge and “beat the system” that has sidelined so many frontline Australian pacemen in recent seasons.
The Hobart Hurricanes coach and Tasmanian Tigers assistant said he’d leave no stone unturned in trying to solve the injury riddles.
“It''s a great time to come to the job because we''ve got a bit of experience and 10-12 other young guys who have an abundance of potential - it''s a really deep bowling talent pool. But that''s irrelevant if they''re not fit,” news.com.au quoted him, as saying.
“No one''s been able to put a finger on it (the injuries to pacemen), so I need a mandate to find a strategy to get the bottom of the cause of our injuries.
“We need to get everyone - sports science guys, the lot - working on making sure guys like (Patrick) Cummins, for example, plays 50-60 Tests for Australia and not just one here or there.”
De Winter, revered as the man responsible for the rebirth of Ben Hilfenhaus and for developing Sheffield Shield player of the year Jackson Bird, beat off a field of international candidates for the job.
CA performance manager Pat Howard said he would be fit in well with existing coaches Mickey Arthur, Justin Langer and Steve Rixon.
