Wellington, July 5: Newly appointed New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who is only 21-year old, showcased his mellowness by claiming that he would lead the Kiwis in his own way.
Williamson is the youngest New Zealand one-day captain, and the fourth youngest of all time.
“In the current set-up we''ve got some great heads; Ross [Taylor] and some of the senior players and John Wright and the coaching staff. [But] it''s important that if you''re to be believable as a leader that you are yourself and you make your own decisions,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Williamson, as saying.
Coach John Wright labeled Williamson n palpable choice after Ross Taylor''s tour was thrown into doubt with a shoulder injury, and with Brendon McCullum not scheduled to arrive until Tuesday.
After just 12 tests and 24 ODIs, Williamson''s craving for a fight is well known following his test-saving century at the Basin Reserve against South Africa in March.
Cricket pundits all over the world would keenly watch his control over the tactical decisions.
“I certainly enjoyed captaining that game [on Monday] and felt reasonably comfortable with the lads in the team and leading them. It was nice to have a few more days in preparation for this game and things can be a little smoother when we''re out on the park and the lads will know their roles,” Williamson said.
With Taylor out for the five ODIs, and possibly longer, Williamson expects to have the job for the first two ODIs at least, before McCullum arrives.
