Mon, 14 Mar 2011 - Bangladesh vs Netherlands, World Cup 2011, 32nd match Group B - Bulletin

Kayes, spinners script easy Bangladesh win

Opener Imrul Kayes’s calm and composed undefeated innings of 73 helped Bangladesh chase down successfully a target of 161 set to by Netherlands in group B match played at Chittagong.

The win has ensured that Bangladesh remain in contention for a knockout stage berth and will have to beat South Africa in the next game and hope result of other matches in the group favour them.

After losing Tamim Iqbal in the first over for nought, Imrul Kayes played a sensible and hassle free innings to make sure he was at the crease when winning runs were scored.

Imrul, who hit a workman like half-century during a win against England, combined with Junaid Siddique for the second wicket to put together a partnership of 92 runs and followed it with a 59 run partnership with Shahriyar Nafees virtually sealing the victory for his team.

He used 113 balls for his 73 and hit only six four but was more interested in picking up the singles and anchored the chase with all the calm in the world to earn him a second Man of the Match in the tournament.

Other significant contributions came from Junaid with 53-ball 35 and Nafees, playing his first match, scored 37 runs from 60 balls.

For Netherlands, Tom Cooper took two wickets while Mudasir Bukhari and skipper Peter Borren had a wicket apiece.

Earlier, after deciding to bat first, Netherlands displayed a timid batting effort against steady Bangladesh bowling performance to be crumbled out for paltry 160 runs.

Dutch batsmen lacked intent and let Bangladesh bowlers to get on the top with all-rounder Ryan Ten Doeschate only man to show some fight with undefeated innings of 53.

Nothing, however, can be taken away from Bangladesh who supported their bowlers brilliantly ion the field by running out four Dutch batsmen that also contributed to low score.

Left arm spinner Abdur Razzaq who opened the bowling was the best bowler on the park taking three wickets for 29 runs in his ten overs. He removed T de Grooth and AF Buurmann in one over to rock back Dutch completely.

Shaqibul Hassan, Rubel Hossian and Sohrawardi Shuvo took a wicket apiece while Shafi-ul Islam was very economical and never let batsmen to score freely.

Eric Szwarczynski, Tom Cooper, Peter Borren and Adeel Raja were all run-out to some suicidal running efforts and Dutch never looked to take game to the Bangladesh bowlers.

Doeschate did his reputation no harm by playing an impressive innings facing both fast bowlers and spinners at ease during his well compiled half-century.

He hit two fours and a huge six and consumed 71 balls for his 53 but ran out of partners in the end.
