Mendis' performance against Zimbabwe shows how spin bowling would dominate T20sSydney, Sep 20: Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis’ magnificent performance in their opening World Cup match against Zimbabwe, when he claimed six wickets in his four overs, has made it clear that spin bowling will dominate the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup. Mendis is the only player in the short history of T20 international cricket to claim six wickets in a match, when a bowler is allowed just four overs, and he has now done it twice, according to News.com.au The first time was against Australia in Kandy last year, when he took 6-16. Spin dominates T20 cricket to a remarkable extent, with batsmen forced to take constant risks against slow bowlers in the helter skelter form of the game, the paper said. The top six bowlers on the International Cricket Council’s Twenty20 player rankings are all spinners, with Ajantha Mendis amongst them in fourth place before Tuesday night’s match, the paper added. All-rounder Shane Watson is the highest ranked Australian bowler in seventh place while the first genuine fast bowler to appear on the list is Malinga ranked ninth, the paper further said. Mendis can turn the ball either way with a flick of his fingers, completely mesmerising batsmen who have not played against him before, the paper concluded. © ANI |
