A century from skipper Colin Ingram got Eastern Cape Warriors out of trouble Tuesday on the opening day of a South African SuperSport Series game at Western Cape Cobras.
Bottom-of-the-table Warriors were struggled at 51-3 in Paarl when Ingram came to the rescue and was unbeaten on 119 as Warriors reached 239-4 by the close in a game hit by rain delays.
After adding 95 fourth-wicket runs with Arno Jacobs against the defending champions and title favourites, Ingram and Wayne Parnell (29 not out) kept the Cobras bowlers at bay.
Ingram faced 239 balls during 283 minutes at the Boland Park crease and struck 17 fours and one six while 21-year-old seamer Beuran Hendricks took 2-48 in 16 overs for the home team.
Another skipper to impress with the bat was Martin van Jaarsveld, whose 80 helped Northern Titans to 273-5 at Willowmoore Park in eastern Johannesburg suburb Benoni against neighbours Highveld Lions.
Mthokozisi Shezi took three wickets and Robbie Frylinck two as visiting Coastal Dolphins restricted Central Knights to 172-5 at Chevrolet Park in central city Bloemfontein where Morne van Wyk (54 not out) was the top scorer.
