Johannesburg, Jan 24 : South Africa captain AB de Villiers has said he is enjoying captaincy right now, but is also aware of the tough road ahead of him.
De Villiers is also pleased that he is leading the team by example after he scored 329 runs with an average of 109.66, including an unbeaten 125 and 96 in the five-match series against Sri Lanka, which the Proteas won 3-2.
“Captaincy is hard work, but I''m enjoying it and it''s great that I''m leading by example at the moment,” The News24 quoted De Villiers, as saying. “I know I will get my tough patches in the future and I''ll have to work through that, but I''m playing well at the moment and using that to my advantage.
I''m still following the same game plans but timing it a bit sweeter than normal.” After winning his maiden one-day series against the Sri Lankans as captain of the team, De Villiers realizes how important it is for the leader to perform well both on and off the field.
“I realized that the guys feed off my energy and it''s very important for me to be calm and in control the whole time.” “Leading from the front, not only with bat in hand, and with catching and so on, but the way I present myself out there, has a big influence.” He also hailed his first series win as the captain of the team, a learning experience. “It was really tough at times but I think it''s one of the most important things that I learned,” he added.
