Narsingh Deonarine struck a patient half-century as the West Indies batsmen continued their resistance against South Africa before lunch on the third day of the second Test here. West Indies were 123 for two at the interval, replying to the South Africans' first innings total of 543 for six declared with Deonarine 50 not out on 50 and Shivnarine Chanderpaul unbeaten on nine. Play had started about 45 minutes later than scheduled because of overnight rain, which left parts of the outfield at Warner Park, if not the pitch, sodden. South Africa's bowlers did not give away any easy runs under partly cloudy skies and kept the West Indies batsmen in check. Morne Morkel made the only breakthrough for the Proteas in a stop-start morning period when West Indies captain Chris Gayle attempted a flat-footed drive at a well-pitched delivery, and was bowled off the inside edge for 50. Gayle added 93 for the second wicket with Deonarine, whose 50 came from 117 balls, with a two through point off Paul Harris just before lunch. South Africa lead the three-Test series 1-0, after they won the first Test by 163 runs inside four days last Sunday at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad. |
