New Zealand opening batsman Craig Cumming had several metal plates inserted into his right cheekbone during surgery following an injury he suffered on the first day of the second Test against South Africa at Centurion Park. New Zealand manager Lindsay Crocker said Saturday that Cumming had also suffered a broken jaw. He spent the night in intensive care at a Johannesburg hospital where he underwent the operation late Friday. "The fact that he is diabetic complicated things," said Crocker. "It was obviously a serious injury but the doctors are happy with the outcome of the surgery." Cumming, who was struck by a bouncer from fast bowler Dale Steyn, will take no further part in the tour but will be unable to fly home for about a week as he recovers from surgery. |
