London, Sep 14: England batsman Jos Buttler has revealed how the England team''s psychologist Mark Bawden told him to keep on playing his incredible scoop shot, which helped him make a name for himself in the international cricket circuit.
Buttler produced two brilliant scoops for four plus three sixes during an over by South Africa''s Wayne Parnell that went for 32 runs at Edgbaston on Wednesday. It marked the Somerset batsman''s explosive entry onto the world stage as England beat South Africa by 28 runs in a Twenty20 match reduced to 11 overs-a-side. Until then, Buttler had struggled in his international career and had managed a top score of just 13 in his first seven innings.
The explosive batsman was out twice attempting the scoop against Pakistan this year but psychologist Bawden told him to be true to his instincts. "I had a bit of a confidence knock getting out playing the shot against Pakistan. But being true to myself was a huge thing.
I had a good chat with Mark about things and had a nice couple of texts off Tres (Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick) saying to be myself and enjoy things," the Sun quoted Buttler, as saying. "I went out with a different approach. The situation dictated how to play and I''m really pleased finally to contribute to an England win. International cricket hasn''t quite gone as I''d have hoped but this gives me a lot of confidence.
I was desperate to have an innings like that for England," he added. Buttler added: "In Twenty20 it''s become the norm when you see fine leg up. I call it a ramp shot. Guys improvise a lot these days and try to second-guess bowlers and I''m glad I have it in my armoury."
