Lendl the latest Simmons ace to star at Leics HQ

They are well used to seeing a Simmons in the runs at Grace Road but on Tuesday Leicestershire' were on the receiving end as the West Indies piled up a significant lead.

Lendl Simmons, batting on the ground where his uncle Phil spent four years as Leicestershire's overseas player in the 1990s, struck 102 before retiring hurt with cramp as the West Indies made 320 for six declared on the second day of the opening warm-up match of their tour of England.

Simmons struck 11 fours and a six and put on 138 with Brendan Nash.

At the close, Leicestershire were 51 for one in their second innings, still 87 runs behind heading into the third and final day.

"It was a pretty flat batting track and I enjoyed it," said Simmons, who also hit a hundred at Grace Road playing for West Indies A against Leicestershire nearly three years ago.

"I know my uncle played here a few years ago and I also played here for the A team a few years ago and I enjoyed today - it was a good feeling.

"I haven't had a chance to talk to him just yet because he's been with the Ireland team in South Africa but hopefully when he gets back I'll have a chat to him.

"When I was young I used to look up to him as a West Indies player and he helped me when I was younger in the under-15s and under-17s."

Simmons made a double century against England for West Indies A at St Kitts in January, while he made his Test debut in the final match of that series at Trinidad.

The West Indies have two more warm-up games, against Essex and the England Lions, before the first Test of a two-match series gets underway at Lord's on May 6.
