Flintoff out first ball

Andrew Flintoff

Andrew Flintoff was out for a golden duck batting for Lancashire in their County Championship match against Somerset at Old Trafford here Thursday.

The England all-rounder now has just a maximum of five more chances to get some first-class runs behind him before the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's next month.

Flintoff, out of Test cricket for over a year and coming back from a fourth operation on his left ankle, has looked good in his role as a pace bowler so far this season.

But the 30-year-old could do with a score to help him convince the selectors he is ready to fire on both fronts in the first of a three-match series against New Zealand starting at Lord's on May 15.

Instead he lasted just one ball Thursday when seamer Peter Trego, who had just bowled opener Paul Horton for 64, followed up immediately by dismissing Flintoff with a full length delivery which left him as he played forward with wicket-keeper Craig Kieswetter holding the edged chance.

Both Trego and Kieswetter had been dismissed by Flintoff as the England quick took an economical two for 40 in 16 overs as Somerset were bowled out for 238 on Wednesday's opening day of this four-day match.

Lancashire wicket-keeper Luke Sutton survived Trego's hat-trick delivery by turning it away for four after the ball drifted on to his pads.
