Losing debut for Zimbabwe in South African competition

Zimbabwe made a losing debut in the South African one-day inter-provincial championship Sunday, going down by six wickets to Eastern Cape Warriors.

The home side won the toss and scored 213-9 in their alloted 45 overs before the Warriors reached 215-4 with 13 balls to spare at Queens Sports Club in the southern city.

Tatenda Taibu top scored for Zimbabwe with 52 runs off 61 balls, including two sixes and five fours, but their bowlers made no impact against a Warriors attack spearheaded by Arno Jacobs, whose 68 had one six and seven fours.

Zimbabwean officials hope competing at home and away against the six South African provincial teams will raise the standard of a national team that suffered a 5-0 one-day international series drubbing in Pakistan this month.
